Save the New Clarence
help us establish Hull's first community owned and run pub
Latest Update June 2024: Three processes have been initiated to try and get the use of The New Clarence building changed from pub to residential:
1. An appeal against its status as an asset of community value.
2. An appeal of the councils decision to refuse it becoming a 29 bedroom HMO.
3. A new planning application in for the 1st and 2nd floors to be a 20 bedroom HMO.
The outcome of these processes should be known over the summer. Our offer to buy the pub to keep it 100% pub remains on the table.

What we are about
We are a group of people from Hull and the surrounding area who are concerned about the rate at which our local pubs are closing. It started off being about just saving The New Clarence but we now want to achieve something for the whole city. Creating a place where individuals and groups can relax and enjoy good food, drinks and music with space for Community groups to meet.
Why The New Clarence should and can be Hull's first Community owned and run pub:
- The New Clarence sadly closed its doors in June 2023. It was a welcoming pub serving the community from across Hull. It is the only pub classified as an Asset of Community Value in the city.
- The community has until April to raise funds and bid to buy it back. Supporters will be able buy shares and we have a £300k grant application submitted
- It will be run as a co-operative, everyone with a share gets a say in how the pub is run
